2008 Aid To Sichuan Earthquake
On 12th of May 2008, an earthquake measuring 8.0 Ms strike Sichuan, China. More than 69,000 lives were lost, more than 373,000 injured and more than 18,000 missing. Many children lost their family and were made homeless.
SJAM-KPS once again came forward to organize a fund raising and successfully collected more than RM230,000 with the plan to build an orphanage home in Sichuan but unfortunately the sum collected was not sufficient to finance the cost. We then decided that the best was to build polyclinics to cater the poor and soon was in contact with the Red Cross of China (RCC) on how best to to build the polyclinics to serve the needy. A meeting was held in Beijing in late 2009 and the RCC then advised us to sponsor 15 polyclinics in Shanxi, an outskirst poor Province in Xi’an, that was also partially affected during the Sichuan earthquake.
Total cost of the 15 polyclinics is RM600,000.00 as each polyclinic cost RM40,000.00, and was divided into 3 phases with each phase consist of 5 polyclinics.
This project became a reality in March 2010 when we signed a MOU with the Red Cross Society of China to build the 1st phase of 5 polyclinics worth RM200,000.00 and the 1st phase polyclinics was completed in Oct. 2010 and a grand handing-over ceremony was held followed by signing of 2nd phase later in the day.
The 3rd phase is expected to be signed in Malaysia sometime in August 2011 when the China Red Cross visit us to understand our administration and looking to more co-operations.
The handing-over of the 2nd & 3rd phases targeted to be in early 2012 and meanwhile funds raising is on-going and we are nearing to the target of RM 600,000.00
